Maine Coons have many features including pointed ears, square muzzle, and their big size. You may have also seen an ‘M’ mark on the forehead of a Main Coon and concluded that it is a defining feature of Maine Coons.

But is that what the ‘M’ really means?

This distinctive feature actually means that the cat is a tabby cat! Tabby is the most common cat color pattern there is. While some Maine Coons can have the ‘M’ on their forehead, not all of them do.

One fun legend about the origin of the marking on Maine Coons is that the Egyptian goddess Mafdet brought cats to planet Earth. Another is that the prophet Muhammad had a cat named Muezza, and the cat once saved him from being bitten by a snake.
